9RAW: Kings Cross shooting

In case you have been living under a rock, the so-called "Kings Cross bogan" Clare Werbeloff has become a full-blown internet sensation.

The 19-year-old Sydneysider's politically incorrect description of a shooting in Sydney's King Cross on Sunday morning has sparked a media firestorm of Corey Worthington proportions.

The story was always likely to mutate — but we here at ninemsn News were surprised to find ourselves caught up in a conspiracy theory today.

Justin Polites, of Starcom MediaVest Group, wrote a blog entry casting doubt on the authenticity of Clare's now infamous "fat wog, skinny wog" account of the shooting.

His blog post has since been followed up by influential media and marketing blog Mumbrella and passed around the Twittersphere.

Justin listed five reasons why Clare may not be the real deal — you can see them all here.

The basic gist is that marketing firm The Projects, which specialises in selling things to young people, may have planted Clare at the scene to give Toohey Extra Dry beer a push (an ad is visible in the background of the video).

He concludes that a call to ninemsn to determine the source of the video is needed "to help establish some truth".

We're happy to oblige — the source of the video was contract cameraman Greg Dulson, who was working the regular night shift for Nine News on Sunday morning.

Greg told us he didn't think there was anything rehearsed about Clare's performance.

"I think she came up to me and then I said 'Do you know what happened?' and she said 'Yes' and she just spontaneously came up with what you saw on the vision there," Greg said.

"I think she was a young girl that had had a few drinks… it wasn't a beat up.

"She didn't stand there [in front of the beer ad] specifically ... I framed it so that the police car was in the back [of the shot].

"You've got to understand that you're at a shooting, you're there to get the action at the time and usually get a grab afterwards."

Besides Greg's account, there are a few more reasons why this is one of the sillier conspiracy theories to do the rounds of the blogosphere.

It seems highly unlikely (as Mumbrella acknowledged) that The Projects could have reacted quickly enough to turn a random, late-night shooting into a marketing stunt.

Commenters on Mumbrella have also pointed out that this would be the most callous PR stunt ever conceived.

And when our reporter Jack Hawke first contacted Clare, she agreed to speak to us without an intermediary.

She didn't refer us to a PR agent and told us via Facebook that she was "loving" the attention.

It was only three hours later that she told us to contact her newly minted minder, who has since denied Clare being involved with any promotion.

So it seems the only sensible thing to do is put this ridiculous theory out of its misery. As Clare herself might say: "chk-chk, boom!"

Its not this ignorant poor girl thats the problem, its the number of people that think her racist comments are funny. Violence arrived in this country with the early settlers and is part of everyday society, worldwide. The majority of immigrants to this great country have made an enormous contribution to its development and don't deserve this tag. Sadly the shooters descendants will one day brag about their ancestor being a convict.
Personally I'm sick and tired of the way people dance around the issues of ethnic crime in this city. Anyone who suggests it dosen't exist is a complete imbecile. Clare said it the way she saw it and if that offended a few PC flees, so be it. Its called free speech ain't it?..or is that another victim of multi- bloody- culturalism?
you are a predjudice stereotyping moron, i would'nt say "like the rest of you want everything now for nothing gen Y spoilt brats" because i know not all people are the same because they may share colour, location or financial situations , however you strike with the term uneducated you yourself should listen to your own dribble and critique yourself as you imply you are so good your s**t does'nt stink , well get the toilet paper and wipe the crap off your chin kiddo. To the western oriental girl Clare who made the grade go for gold , i hope not but you may need some finances for grief counselling at a later date
I support Clare in that I hope it's an eye opener to all those idiots out there who still go around calling themselvs a *** talking about broz and women and shooting because of what, someone slept with someone's cousin! The video is hilarious though and I wouldn't call her racist because hey it's a descriptive term of stereotype behaviour just the same as everyone calling her a bogan!
set up? whatever. unlikely. more likely they're all just drunk idiots telling their story. and just for the record claire, your "***" accent sounds more kiwi than anything else so dont give up your day job in the hopes of scoring a role on home & away or anything like that! ha ha the fact that they aired such an interview means they were looking for attention as many would take offence to the terms she used & the tv station would've known this. in this politically correct world theres no way it wouldn't cause a stir... personally i think they're all idiots for getting their faces on tv & involved in a violent crime that didnt concern them for the sake of their 15 seconds of fame...
In a country where everybody is equal, how dare thw DT use the term, 'True Blue'. There is nothing politicaly correct about this. This is racism. By the way what was this woman doing in the red light district of King Cross anyway.
She painted a perfect picture of the type of people involved. When my greek friends see a fight between two streotypical wo g boys they would have described it the same way. Majority of Australians under 25 would have, regardless of the nationality.
I cant believe that this one little interview has come to so much scrutiny... seriously, its not a new age thing to say peopleare ***, asians what ever its life people and society, none of this is racist what so ever so you people out there who have nothing better to do go outside and smell the roses or something because it is people like you that make these mountains out of molehills. Politically correct... i do recall a movie, hmm let me remember what is was called.... arhh thats right it was called "*** BOY" tell me where in this it was racist??? Seriously people wake up and stop chewing the fat!
I find the term '***' quite offensive, having grown up with being called that by others who used my racial background (not my background mind you, but that of my family two generations previous) as a means to belittle, humiliate and gain advantage. That ethnic realtiy is something over which I had no choice. As for 'bogan', 'slack-jawed yokel' and 'bushpig', these are equally insensitive terms that describe outcomes of choice and, more rarely perhaps, opportunity...nonetheless, these are things that can be overcome - through work, education - but initially, a decision not to be a 'bogan' or 'bushpig'. As for being ethnically identifiable, not much chance of changing that to fit within a narrow minded view of what ought to be.
There are comments on here from "***s" that say get a grip it was a good laugh. I didn't learn any slang terms for other cultures until I started working with older generations and I came from a "hick town" full of "bushpigs" and "yokels". The only racist people I see on here are the ones like "Linda, Brisbane" who obviously have travelled no further than their letter boxes to experience Australia.
