Defence officials have begun an investigation into the fatal shooting of the Iraqi trade minister's bodyguard by Australian soldiers.
The Defence Department said the investigation, headed by a major and a warrant officer, was expected to last two weeks.
"The investigating officer will examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the use of rules of engagement," Defence said in a statement.
"The investigating officer will also make recommendations on whether any changes are required to ADF tactics, techniques and procedures.
"This is standard procedure for an investigation of this type."
Defence said it would make public the outcome of the investigation once it had been completed.
"Australian officials are liaising with the Iraqi government to keep them updated on the progress of the investigation," the statement said.
"Any consideration of compensation payments or act of grace payments will be reserved until the investigation is completed."
Australian soldiers were conducting a routine security check for the visit of a senior Australian trade official to Baghdad on June 21 when they opened fire on plainclothes bodyguards as they left the Iraqi trade minister's compound.
One guard was killed and three were wounded. Two civilians were also wounded.
Prime Minister John Howard has so far resisted calls for a formal apology over the incident, preferring to wait until inquiries are completed.
Mr Howard has said the shooting will not affect trade relations between Australia and Iraq.
