African refugee jailed for sex offences

A 34-year-old man, whose family fled from war in both the Congo and Angola, has been jailed for more than five years for child sex offences.

Djuma Omana gave his two victims alcohol and cannabis on the day of the offences in July 2005, Judge Malcolm Robertson said in the South Australian District Court.

The two girls, aged 15 and 16, had stayed at his house that night and woke at various times to find Omana lying on top of them or beside them on a mattress.

He had sex with one of the girls and indecently assaulted the other.

Omana later pleaded guilty to two charges of unlawful sexual intercourse and to three charges of indecent assault.

Judge Robertson said the offences involved a breach of trust and were serious in nature.

But he said he accepted that Omana, who came to Australia after marrying while living in South Africa, was both remorseful and contrite.

The judge imposed a jail sentence of five years and two months with a non-parole period of three years.

Both terms were backdated to May last year, when Omana was taken into custody.
