Video special: Death of a princess

James Hewitt, the man branded the late Princess Diana's "love rat" by Britain's tabloid newspapers, has failed to deny he is the real father of Prince Harry.

In an exclusive interview with A Current Affair's Tracy Grimshaw, to be broadcast tonight, Hewitt tells of his last conversation with Diana, his dislike of the Royal family and the delicate question of Harry's paternity.

His handling of the latter question — he has stormed out of interviews or issued flat denials in the past — marks a dramatic shift, and arouses fresh speculation he is the true father of Britain's youngest prince.

In the far-reaching interview, the army major also erupts angrily when he speaks about Prince Charles and the latter's role as the future King of England.

And he lashes out at what he calls the "hypocrisy" of the royal family over Diana's memorial, and paints himself as Diana's "protector".

"There was only one person at the time that could have provided that [protection] and it was me," he said.

"There were millions there to protect the Queen, and you know England and all that it stands for ... and so I chose to help someone who was unlikely to achieve that elsewhere"

Hewitt reveals details of the last words he spoke to Diana, and how the princess enjoyed shocking "the establishment" right up to the day of her death.

"Before she was killed … when I last spoke to her, she said 'I am going to shock the world and go off with some big fat black man'."

When asked if he was envious that Diana was able to conduct an open affair with Dodi Al-Fayed, the man who raised the ire of the British press, Hewitt appeared magnanimous.

"I was pleased for her — pleased that she had achieved what she had set out to achieve when she found herself in an unhappy situation with Charles," he said.
