Whitlams frontman Tim Freedman has hit back at The Chaser after the comedy team poked fun at his songs on last week's show.

In a lengthy post on his band’s website, Freedman implies Chaser Chris Taylor singled him out for satire over a bad break-up with Freedman’s ex-girlfriend – a woman the singer still sees.

Anna Skellern worked on the first season of The Chaser's War on Everything and Freedman claims she was dropped for the second series after her romance with Taylor soured.

"It was the very first series, and the actress was an ex-girlfriend of mine," he wrote in his post.

"Apparently she did not make it to the second series after a romance with one Chris Taylor turned pear-shaped."

Freedman goes on to warn men about socialising with a woman who has "been involved with any presently famous satirists".

"Could it be that as I was still seeing her on a purely social level during the first series that I had unwittingly become embroiled in a matter of the heart?

"Was a score being settled?" he wrote.

Taylor's skit made fun of Freedman's apparent obsession with the hip inner-Sydney suburb Newtown.

"I was drinking on King Street, The Sando shuts at 2. Met a girl at the Marlborough, at the Court House too," went the song which went to air in last Wednesday’s episode.

"Turned it all into a song, but there's a problem after just one verse I'm out of Newtown references. There's a thousand songs I've written and they're all about bloody Newtown."

Taylor has denied his relationship with Skellern influenced then producer Andrew Denton's decision to let her go.

"He (Freedman) was speculating that the song was written out of some sort of jealous rage or payback which isn't the case at all," he told The Herald Sun.

Taylor said the song didn't have to do with "ancient history".

"My relationship with Anna didn't end badly. We're still good friends and see each other quite a bit. We were still going out at the time of the second series," he told the newspaper.
