They often chew shoes — and are sometimes accused of ‘eating homework’ — but in the UK a dog with unusual tastes has had to undergo emergency surgery after eating its 40th pair of underwear.
Taffy, a springer spaniel has an insatiable appetite for pieces of human clothing having eating more than 300 socks and 15 pair of shoes.
Taffy can also add a set of car keys to his diet.
However, owners Sharon and Eubie Saayman noticed that Taffy was in pain after eating their three-year-old son's underpants.
"Taffy would find the pants that were left behind everywhere all the time," Sharon Saayman of Staffordshire, UK told the BBC.
"But apart from that, he's a lovely dog and eating these things is his only fault."
The couple said that normally, all the other items would pass 'naturally' through Taffy, but in this case the undies got tangled in the dog.
Mr Saayman, a vet, performed the two-hour operation to remove the undies.
"If a dog gets an obstruction it can be life-threatening, so we try to keep things away from him," Eubie Saayman told the BBC.
"We make jokes about it but it's actually very serious."
Taffy has since made a full recovery.
