Accused canoe fraudster John Darwin stalked graveyards in the search for the name of a dead person he could use to obtain a fake passport, it was claimed today.
The "back from the dead" man also scoured newspaper records in the hunt for a name he could use after disappearing in an alleged sea accident in 2002.
Police believe the former prison guard found the name of a dead baby John Jones who was born five months before him but died five weeks after birth, the Daily Mail reports.
Darwin, 57, is then believed to have used the dead baby's name to acquire a birth certificate.
He then allegedly used the certificate and a black-and-white photograph of him disguised in a long beard to obtain a passport from authorities.
John Jones was born March 27, 1950 and died from enteritis in a hospital for infectious diseases.
His family were disgusted by the revelations.
"It's terrible to think that this man may have used my brother's name in his scheme," Jones' sister Frieda Woods told the Daily Mirror.
"My parents always used to speak about John and told us he'd died barely a month after being born.
"He was premature and underweight."
Police confirmed they were investigating the use of John Jones in the case.
Darwin and his wife Anne, 55, remain in custody while enquiries continue.
Darwin disappeared from the couple's home in 2002 and was presumed dead after his destroyed canoe was found.
He "returned from the dead" when he walked into a London police station on December 1.
His wife admitted the pair had discussed a scheme for life insurance after revealing the pair were in "a lot of debt".
She insists she had no idea what her husband was planning until he arrived on their doorstep 11 months after his disappearance.
