Nicole Kidman has thanked media querying her about her pregnancy during a brief appearance outside a Sydney restaurant today, but refused to comment on the gender of the unborn child.
"I'm very excited ... thankyou, thankyou, thankyou," Kidman said as she braved the paparazzi outside Lucio's in Sydney's upscale Paddington.
When one of the pack asked whether it was a boy or a girl, she added: "Too personal."
Restauranteur Lucio Galletto was more forthcoming, revealing that both his famous patrons sipped on mineral water during their meals salad and zucchini for Nic, swordfish for Keith.
"They looked terrific I didn't know they were expecting a baby, actually," he told National Nine News reporter Wendy Kingston.
"I hadn't seen them for a while ... they didn't look like they were celebrating anything but they looked very close.
"They obviously had something else to think about so they left the food (choices) to us."
Kidman's publicist confirmed the 40-year-old star is pregnant.
"Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban confirmed today that they are expecting a baby," Wendy Day said in a statement.
"The couple are thrilled."
The confirmation comes after US reports Kidman dropped plans to shoot a major new film in Germany to protect the health of her unborn child.
Kidman's representatives last week attempted to shoot down pregnancy reports, describing them as "gossip", but the
New York Post today quoted "extremely well-placed sources" as saying the Australian actress was expecting.
"Of course, everyone knows she's pregnant and lying about it," the source told the
NY Post.
Kidman was scheduled to begin shooting the Stephen Daldry-directed post World War II drama, The Reader, with Ralph Fiennes this month.
The NY Post reported Kidman, who has suffered miscarriages in the past, is "so concerned about the welfare of her unborn child" that she quit the film.
The film is produced by Hollywood studio Weinstein Company and is based on Bernhard Schlink's prizewinning book about a man who carries a longtime sexual obsession for an older woman who is later prosecuted for war crimes after it emerges she was a member of the SS and a guard at Auschwitz.
A spokesperson for Weinstein, Matthew Frankel, said: "I am being told that the status on The Reader has not changed".
According to the
NY Post, adding fuel to the Kidman pregnancy rumours was another source who said a
Vanity Fair editor was recently overheard talking about pushing up Kidman's photo shoot for the magazine's annual Hollywood issue.
"It's because the costumes she's set to wear won't fit her much longer," the source said.
Kidman has two adopted children - Connor, 12, and Isabella, 14 - with ex-husband Tom Cruise.
Speculation as to whether Kidman was expecting has been rife in recent weeks, with scores of paparazzi photos focused on her "baby bump".
Kidman and Urban met at a G'Day LA event honouring Australians in January 2005, and married in Sydney 18 months later.
Kidman's first marriage to fellow Hollywood actor Tom Cruise broke down in 2001.
