A controversial TV tampon advertisment featuring a woman with a pet beaver will not be cancelled immediately, even after a large number of viewer complaints.

The Kotex ad shows a woman having lunch, getting her hair done and lying on a beach, all with the beaver in tow.

The ad ends with the woman giving a pack of tampons to the beaver and the voice-over: "You've only got one. So for the ultimate care down there, make it U."

An Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) spokesperson confirmed the watchdog had received complaints over the ad, which was first aired on Sunday, but said a decision on whether to pull the commercial will not be made until their next meeting in April.

Campaign spokeswoman Penny Warneford told ninemsn they had only received seven complaints from the ASB and they are a normal part of "fem care" advertising.

"Every 'fem care' ad gets complaints, because some people find it uncomfortable", she said.

"Oftentimes the complaints are not coming from people that we're having a conversation with," she said.

"Some of them are much older and some even come from men."

Ms Warneford said their research found that 94 percent of women aged 18 to 24 said they used euphemisms for the word "vagina".

"They feel more comfortable considering 'fem care' when they're using a name for it," she said.

"There's no point skirting around fact that pads or tampons are for your menstral period and we have used a euphemism for vagina so woman could stand up and address their feminine care."

The beaver ad, which is shown after 8.30pm with an M rating, is the latest in a series of controversial Australian creations.

Last year, the Tourism Australia "So where the bloody hell are you" campaign was banned in the UK.

In 1990, Holeproof's Antz Pantz "Sic Em Rex" ad — in which an enthusiastic echnida goes for a trail of ants crawling up a woman's leg — caused a big stir.
