Peter Harvey has been with the Nine Network since 1975 and was the News Director in Canberra before joining the Nine News team at TCN-9’s Sydney studios in February 1997.
In August 2003, together with his news commitments, Harvey joined 60 Minutes to present the program’s Mailbag segment each week.
He has reported on major national political events, including the November 11, 1975 dismissal of the Whitlam Government and covered federal election campaigns, travelling with prime ministers and opposition leaders.
Harvey has reported from every continent and covered every major international trip by Australian prime ministers from The Great Wall of China to the White House, to Number 10 Downing Street and The Kremlin.
Harvey also covered the first Gulf War for the Nine Network. Based in Saudi Arabia he was the only Australian reporter with the American forces when the war began.
He also reported on the people power revolution in the Philippines that toppled Ferdinand Marcos and elected Cory Aquino.
Before joining the Nine Network, Harvey was with The Guardian in London and won the British Reporter of the Year Award.
Prior to that he worked with Newsweek magazine, where his assignments included covering the Vietnam War in the late 1960s.
Harvey began his career as a cadet with Sydney’s Daily Telegraph and in 1964 won a Walkley Award while writing for the paper.
Peter Harvey is married with two children.
