Muir won a premiership with the Knights in 1997.

Former Newcastle Knights premiership player Adam Muir has been charged with assaulting police after an incident outside a Newcastle bar.

The 36-year-old, who also represented Australia, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning along with another 36-year-old man.

Police were called to the Queens Wharf Brewery at 1.30am after a scuffle broke out among a large group of men.

Police alleged Muir became involved in a fight with officers, tackling one to the ground before being subdued with capsicum spray and arrested.

Muir, from Marks Point, was charged with two counts of assaulting police, resisting arrest and intimidating police.

The other man was charged with wilfully obstructing police.

Both men will appear in Newcastle Local Court on May 27.

Muir played 99 games as a back-rower for the Knights between 1992 and 1997, when he was a member of the victorious grand final team.

In 1998 he joined the now-defunct North Sydney Bears, continuing with them through the Northern Eagles merger with Manly in 2000.

Muir then captained the South Sydney Rabbitohs during their reintroduction into the NRL in 2002 before his career was cut short by injury.

He represented NSW in 13 State of Origin games between 1995 and 2001 and played three tests for Australia.
