The federal govt plans an ethics commission with powers to investigate misconduct in public life.
The Rudd government has downplayed reports it is considering establishing a federal ethics commission with powers to investigate misconduct and give ethics training to MPs and public servants.
Special Minister of State John Faulkner was quoted as saying the move would be considered as part of a review of existing structures, and alongside planned legislative reform to boost government accountability.
"The Rudd government is progressing with several accountability measures - Freedom of Information, privacy and whistleblowers reform," Senator Faulkner told The Weekend Australian newspaper.
"But an ethics commission is an issue I'll certainly be examining."
However, a spokesman for Senator Faulkner Saturday downplayed the report.
"All we're contemplating at present is a public service ethics commission to give advice on ethical issues," the spokesman told AAP.
