Australians have been urged to cut some slack to troops serving in Afghanistan after soldiers were accused of mistreating Taliban prisoners by locking them in a dog pen overnight.

But the incident has angered Muslim leaders and the Australian Greens who say the troops made a "big mistake".

A defence inquiry report - released last Friday - found there was no evidence four Taliban suspects detained by Australian troops in late April had been mistreated.

But the investigating officer did acknowledge that complaints about their treatment, including being locked up in a dog pen, may have stemmed from cultural differences.

Both the government and opposition said Australian troops were involved in a tough battle.

"We are at war in Afghanistan with people who will employ any tactic including the use of children as shields and as a means of propaganda and it is a tough battle," Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon said.

"But we always endeavour to comply on all occasions with international law and I am confident that our people have done so."

Opposition defence spokesman Nick Minchin said it was un-Australian to complain about the way troops had treated prisoners.

"It's pretty outrageous for any Australian to complain about the behaviour of Australian troops in relation to these Taliban extremists who not only treat other troops but their own people with such degradation, cruelty and appalling procedures," he said.

"In this case, I think Australians should give our troops a bit of slack."

But the incident has angered the nation's Muslim leadership who regard dogs as unclean.

"To be honest, I am appalled that Australian soldiers have been implicated with such disgusting treatment of human beings," Australian Federation of Islamic Councils president Iqbal Patel said.

"No human bring should be in any way placed in a dog pen."

RSL national president Bill Crews says there might have been extraneous circumstances surrounding the incident.

"I know that our men and women certainly comply with the laws of armed conflict," he said.

Abiding by those rules still tested Australian troops as it was a difficult environment.

"There are circumstances where you need to take extraordinary measures to do the job and that might be one of the cases here that we are referring to."

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown has described the incident as a "big mistake".

"For Australia to find itself keeping prisoners in dog kennels, dog pens, even overnight, is a big mistake," he told reporters in Canberra.

The situation in Afghanistan was "very nasty" and the Taliban were ruthless and destructive, but they should not be kept in dog pens.

The apparent breach of the Geneva conventions pointed to a failure by the government to provide backup to ensure adequate transfer and detention facilities, Senator Brown said.

In a statement tonight, Defence said the prisoners had been held in the best safe and secure holdings available for use.

The four men had been held at the forward operating base on April 29, 2008, for approximately 15 hours.

"The enclosures were constructed from HESCO bastions that are approximately 1.4 metres high, 1.2 metres wide and 1 metre deep," Defence said.

"The bastions are made with weld mesh and a non-woven geotextile lining."

As soon as it was practical, the men were transferred elsewhere.

"The enclosures offered the best secure, safe and isolated short-term accommodation until the following day," Defence said.

"As soon as practicable three of the detainees were extracted from the Forward Operating Base to the Dutch detention facility at Tarin Kowt.

"The fourth detainee was released from the forward operating Base."

Defence insists all handling procedures were carried out in accordance with Australian obligations under domestic and international law.

With all due respect to the muslim communities. They should stop crying victim. There is a job to be done, and drastic measures are needed to be taken to do them, this situation is barely a drastic measure. The Taliban perform horrible attrocities upon the inhabitants of Afghanistan. To defeat a horror you have to have to be horrible. Do gooders and civil libeterians are the scourge of this planet. They are the cause society is in the mess it is. honestly if any of these snivel libeterians had been influenced by war and genocide on a life level, they would most likely be all for these said actions
I think that this is fair enough. Look at how much pain and suffering the Taliban has caused, how many families are destroyed because of their little games. They should be grateful that we even alow them to stay in dog pens, if it was up to me, the punishment would be a lot worse, dogs dont even deserve these peoples company. How do you think they would treat our soldiers if they ever happened to fall into their hands? These people do not deserve a fair go. They have raped, killed and prostetuted both women and children. Is that they call a revolution?
SAS Special Forces Vs the Taliban ... hmmmmm lets see who i would support... a dog pen for 24hours as the "most secure and safe area for a short period of time" Vs "would you like a penthouse suite with that Mr Taliban" i think i'll support my SAS boys here... and last but not least its not a religiuos thing!! Just becuase they are muslims doesnt mean that is the reason that they were put into dog pens!!! They are "suspected Taliban militants"... maybe one of them is a secret Christian!! It is no a religious thing.... so if you were in a war and gun fire was everywhere would you sit in a dog pen for 24 hours to say safe and secure.... atleast we gave them the courtsey of keepying them alive!!! And Mr Amabassador Of Afghanistan - If it means that our soldiers go to war to keep you alive on Austrlian soil, im sure you are more than happy but please lets give these suspects everything on a silver plate Mr Ambassador.
How quickly we forget that if the tables were turned how our troops would be treated if captured by the Taliban? They should thank their lucky stars a dog pen was the worst of their worries. These people hate the Western world and would kill you as quick as blink, don't be so nieve people. I support any force the Aussie troops need to apply to protect themselves and the safety of others.
I completely agree that anyone who is a proven terrorist should not be given any real rights - but does this not say 'suspect' terrorists? As long as they don't abuse them or anything... On the other hand, I agree with patriot down there that there isn't exactly another place to keep them. What ELSE are they going to do with them? And yes, they are effing dangerous, caution must be used even if they're not terrorists.
I have 2 sons in the forces. One over in Afghanistan and one on his way home now from his third tour of duty in the Gulf. I for one have nothing but praise for our Forces. Am I bias? You betcha!! Their job is a daily risk of life. They are "working" under extreme pressure and constant danger. How are they to know which is the good or bad guys over there? I dread Army officials showing up on my doorstep to explain how my son was killed. They are in areas where they can't even trust children to not kill you so please explain how anyone is above suspicion in these circumstances. Give our boys the credit they deserve and not think they would bypass a "proper jail" to use a dog pen to hold suspicious characters. Most nights these boys sleep on the ground in remote areas. So in reality they are sleeping the same as their so called harshly treated prisoners. Where are the complains for our boys comfort? Society these days dictates criminals have far better rights than the good guys. It's sad.
I'm glad to see that not all people are blinded by the bleeding heart syndrome that seems to have swept this nation. As stated by others these people are prepared to kill our boys and not think twice about it, our boys did what they believed to be the safest thing for them and the people that think that this is inhuman should take a closer look at these type of people. I have had several of my closet friends come back with bits missing due to bombing and nobody is bleeding for them and saying that it's a outrage. Think about tose who have lost and then think these people in the dog pen are still alive...
I am appalled and ashamed, both at the military's actions and our responces to this article. "He who fights the monster should take care lest he become a monster himself." -Nietzsche
I am surprised that there are no hand cuffs that a person can be restrained with. It surprises me that a dog cage must be used and that there is not some other means at hand if it is already planned to hold people and question them. With the religious implications of being placed in dog pens....it is easy to think that this is done for more reasons than just as the "only means available". To be proactive, other means should be suggested and implemented. Meanwhile... Our troops are risking their lives in a foreign country and I just hope that they will all be able to come home to their families soon.
I can't believe this crap I am reading as responses! Is little Johnny Howard back again? No one deserves to be kept in dog pens - this only extends the circle of hate. Have they been convicted? Are they only suspects? What are Australian troops doing there anyway? This is the sort of behaviour that has made Americans so "popular" around the world.
