A gun lobbyist and former councillor has been ordered to fork out thousands of dollars to three lesbians after being found guilty of inciting hatred against homosexuals.

A Queensland judge said while Gympie resident Ron Owen was "entitled to be a homophobe", he went too far with a bumper sticker that read: "Gay rights? The only rights gays have is the right to die."

See what other ninemsn readers had to say about this story.

The state's Anti-Discrimination tribunal found Mr Owen guilty after he parked his car with the bumper sticker outside Cooloola Shire Council offices, north of Brisbane, The Australian newspaper reports.

The publisher of the right-wing-pro-militia magazine Lock Stock and Barrel was taken to the tribunal by a group of local lesbians, who claimed they were offended by the sticker despite only one of them seeing it.

Two of the women were awarded $5000, while a third was awarded $2500 in damages.

Mr Owen, the former president of the National Firearms Association of Australia, was also reprimanded for comments he made during a television interview about the case.

The tribunal ordered Mr Owen write an apology for inciting hatred against homosexuals and causing offence to homosexuals in Gympie.

"Ron Owen is entitled to be a homophobe and he is entitled to publicly express his homophobic views," tribunal member Darryl Rangiah said.

"That much is required in a society that values freedom of thought and expression. However there are limits."

The tribunal ruled that while Mr Owen wasn't the registered owner of the car, he had use of it and the sticker went "beyond a mere joke".

Mr Owen, who has spent six months defending the charges, has vowed to appeal to decision.

I truly find it astounding that in this day and age there is still so much ignorance and hate in the world.
I would be offended, as I am when I read or hear of any bigoted, hurtful comment. Mr Owen is, in my opinion, very immature, and I wonder too, about the ethics of the businesses that make a living printing these stickers. I hope he (Mr Owen) doesn't go through the rest of his life with hate in his heart.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me! Bumper Stickers on cars, may leave invisible scars, But all my friends will not desert me. Words of hate, only open a gate,to the hearts evil side, The right to live, those left to die,are paths both narrow and wide! So please Mr Owen, know that all these seeds that your sowin' Are never going to do anyone any good. And before you throw any stones, look at the flesh around your bones, I really think you should! So let me finish up by saying, it's for you, I'll be praying, That you can have a change of heart and mind. Cause I know if you do,a better world waits for you, And a happiness you've never known, you'll find!
Was he playing his banjo while he was driving? Homosexuals have been around a lot longer than red necks and christians. That's just a part of history. But sueing him isn't the solution. If he wants to say it he should realise that it's only showing how ignorant he is and people should look at him with sympathy for being so ridiculously stupid.
There are comments equating freedom of speech to being allowed to say it in any manner you please. People are entitled to a belief but the manner in which that belief is expressed is the issue. The language used is offensive pure and simple. If it were directed towards women in general there would be an outcry (take the example of the Muslim clerics view of women likened to a piece of meat - which is just as offensive). In a multicultural society we all have to deal with differing views on life and we manage to do that well as a whole. Most of the prejudice comes from ignorance. In this case the person in question is, remarkably, in a position of power within his community (a councilor). And like it or not, some people look to figures like these for indications on how to behave. So there is reason to pursue the removal of the sticker and ensuring that publically that view is not expressed in such a manner again.
I am not gay. Would I take exception if I would see an antistraight sticker on somebody's car? Frankly, NO. I might have a bit of a giggle, and that would be it. Forgotten after about ten seconds, unless I would start thinking how stupid in this Day and Age that person, straight or gay, would be.
I am a Christian and according to the Bible, Homosexuality is a sin. being aboriginal, asian, jewish or female is not. What's more being aboriginal, asian, jewish or female, is the way God created some people to be. He created marriage for 1 Male and 1 Female... Not Female and Female and not Male and Male. I believe just as I should have the right to state my belief's so should he. Mind you, I'd like to know whether he actually put the sticker there or whether it was the registered owner of the vehicle. I'd also like to point out that Christians are attacked, hated, insulted and suffer biased court judgements regularly, and for some reason Muslims seem to have more rights in a country that they immigrated to than Christians in a country that they settled. The world has become a really mixed up place.
To those who think this is all OK and we need to get a sense of humour, without fail at least once a week I will come across a bumper sticker that has some profane message or sexual connotation. Stickers of women being used as nothing more than sex objects and other things that I don't (and I would think most parents wouldn't) want their children to see. No, I'm not a prude, and yes I have a great sense of humour, but you have to wonder what we've come to that we need to shove this sort of message in people's faces everyday. Doesn't show us as being a highly intelligent and educated people does it?
Hello ..its a bumper sticker...Can i sue because i dont like the one that says "Save the bush bulldoze greenie"
It's obvious to me that this man is hiding from his own sexual inadequacies, as is any person who exhibits this much outward hatred of anyone who is different to themselves. This comment is atroscious and I am definately offended by these comments. There's having a joke and then there's going too far. This man has taken it too far and should prosecuted to the very depths of the law. Come on..this is the 21st Century!! These comments should not be tolerated and we should learn to live and let live. Wake up!
