It's supposed to be the happiest day of one's life — but for this 21-year-old, it ended in handcuffs in the back of a police car, accused of taking part in a sham marriage.

With her white wedding gown, veil and pearl necklace, she looked every inch a traditional bride — until police swooped, arresting her and the Nigerian groom for trying to outsmart the UK's strict immigration laws.

The unnamed woman was led away and questioned on suspicion of helping an illegal immigrant to enter Britain while her 37-year-old husband was taken into custody, the UK's Daily Mail reports.

He now faces deportation on the grounds he entered the country illegally.

Police said their suspicions about the pair were confirmed when they didn't leave the church together.

Officers said before the wedding, the couple had lived in south-east London but not in the same house.

The arrests on September 17 were part of a crackdown on illegal immigrants in the UK, police said.

After the wedding, police raided a south London home where several passports were found with different names but the same pictures.

Two other men were also arrested and subsequently jailed for possessing false passports.
