Nothing wrong with fake lesbians: readers

A warning that the boom in bogus lesbians could have serious emotional consequences has been rubbished by ninemsn readers.

Social commentator Tim Duggan yesterday described the current "fauxmosexual" craze as dangerous, claiming it was doing more harm to the gay community than good and was leading to emotional damage.

Are women who fake being lesbians doing more harm than good? Have your say.

The claim has been backed up by Merryn Johns, editor of lesbian magazine LOTL, who said that women who faked being gay were disrespectful to years of campaigning for equal rights

"The real sadness for everyone is incurred when women questioning their sexuality offer themselves but are unsure about how far they want to explore or invest in these encounters," Ms Jones said.

"Vain, young, mostly straight women might like to think about the wider consequences of their pursuit of social glory," she said.

But ninemsn readers across the country disagreed — denying claims the fad wasn't "real acceptance" and was instead "titillating, easy-on-the-eyes acceptance".

"I would have thought that if anything, the 'fauxmosexual' trend would be a good thing for the gay and lesbian community," Chris from Sydney wrote.

"Surely it is a sign of increased acceptance of same sex relationships in today's society?"

Viv from Newcastle agreed, saying: "No matter if they are five minute lesbians — people are talking about it and accepting it — shouldn't this be encouraging to all kids out there who are confused about their sexuality?"

Another reader said experimentation was a good thing because it pushed people to accept others whether they were gay, straight or bisexual.

"Perhaps with all this media focusing on gay and experimental celebrities, other homosexuals and bisexuals will feel confident enough to come out and be happy about being the way they are," Henning from NSW wrote.

"There's nothing wrong with not being straight and there's nothing wrong with being, gay, straight [or] bi."

And Jill from WA summed it up in a nutshell: "These so called bogus lesbians are making being gay OK ... how can gay people be annoyed with this?"

Whirlwind celebrity lesbian flings — like the one between MTV VJ Ruby Rose and Veronicas twin Jess Origliasso — have reportedly caused the wave of "fauxmosexuals" on the real life party circuit.

Fauxmosexuals - or what ever you want to label them are nothing more then attention seekers. We are now unfortunately (or fortunately for some) living in a very sad and sick society that is getting progressively worse as time goes on. If this was how life and society was really intended to be then we should have all been born intersexual and these types of pathetic articles would never appear in the media. I guess I must be one of those happy little morons writing these pathetic articles and feeling good about it as well.
Lesbians are cool
Maybe all of you who are claiming that people can just decide whether they are gay or not should take the time to actually speak to someone who ACTUALLY IS GAY ! It's not something people have the ability to choose, it's the way they are , much like a heterosexual person dosen't choose to be attracted to opposite sex. Stop flaunting your ignorance and get your facts straight.
Melski, you are so far off the *** point it's laughable. The very point is that these people AREN'T homosexual, they AREN'T BISEXUAL, they're adopting these stereotypes like a fashion for God's sake. It's no different to a caucasian person acting out black or asian stereotypes for the sake of laughs and attention. It's not an issue of societies acceptance , it IS an issue of these people trivializing what GENUINE homosexual and bisexual people have had to go through to gain this acceptance and tolerance, and turning it into a attention-seeking fad.
Sexuality is a dynamic and sliding scale. Experimantal and temporary bisexuality, particularly among females is rooted in history. Lesbains angry at being back-traded for a man may feel used. So did the man before you and the lovers to come. It is truly sad when lesbians scold bi-sexual women for not being 'Gay enough'. Get over yourselves.
You know what people, you are who you are. And it's not the sex you fall in love with it's the person, so why label people. Just because society doesn't want to accept homosexuality, they still love to write news on it!! If hollywooders want themselves seen in the news as gay then so be it, maybe it will wake some people wake up and show that it is socially acceptable.
I am so over the "gay" issues - keep it to yourselves and no we don't like your displays of immorality and no we don't like you applying your pressures and trying to convince us that you are 'normal'. Pity the young children being brought up in this confusion - no wonder we have unstable teenagers and young adults, normality is under threat. Stand up Politicians and do what is right by your Creator !
Many gay and lesbian youth commit suicide...celesbians offers opportunity for furthering social acceptance of gay and lesbian so I am not going to knock it or put down anyone who pretends or otherwise...it can only be a good thing and possibly lead to less young people feeling that they have to end it all
Couldn't have done as much damage to gay rights as people like Paris Hilton and Pussy Cat Dolls have done to (how many decades worth of hard work now?) womens rights. Face it girls, ur still living in a man's world and the more you play up things like this, the longer it will stay that way. But what I know, I'm just a guy...??
having recently left high school i have seen what happens in the school yards. kids are being encouraged by their peers to get with other girls. a very high percentage of these girls are only pretending to be gay because the males of the school think this is a major turn on. it is attention seeking for all the wrong reasons. it happens at parties, school discos, you name it. where students get together it happens. you would be suprised with the age some of these teenagers are.
