Climate change is putting Australia's suburbs at risk of a termite invasion.
The warning will be delivered in a speech from Emeritus Professor Patrick Troy at Griffith University on Friday.
Prof Troy says climate change is bringing termites south.
"On top of that, since we moved to building on concrete slabs instead of elevated houses, we're unable to manage the termites when the slabs crack, creating easy access for the pests," Prof Troy said.
He said the toxin used to discourage termites from most houses only had a half-life of 20 years, adding more weight to his concerns.
"It's important that we make Australian cities sustainable for the economy," Prof Troy said.
"It's also important for social structures, and for the vitality and existence of our society."
Prof Troy, an urban researcher at the Australian National University for the past 40 years, will deliver his speech after he accepts an honorary doctorate from Griffith University.
