A resourceful Australian man who took matters into his own hands when his BBQ was besieged by bees has become an internet sensation.

Have you ever experienced a similar problem? Tell us below.

The mystery man says he had noticed a loud buzzing sound coming from under his BBQ cover, so he fashioned a "weapon of buzz destruction" by taping a cockroach bomb to the end of a garden rake.

Backed by photographs documenting his DIY-extermination mission, he set the can off, shoved it under the cover and "ran like the clappers", his email says.

Returning a few minutes later, he found an incredible sight: a pile of dead bees and eight combs of honey hanging from the wooden side shelf.

"These are feral bees – European honeybees that are not native to this country but the same kind that beekeepers use," pollination expert Dr Saul Cunningham told ninemsn.

"They like to live in protected spaces, so when they escape their little white boxes they seek out something similar ... if the BBQ wasn't covered, it wouldn't have happened."

Dr Cunningham says the BBQ hive housed over 1000 bees, and it would have only gotten bigger had the resourceful homeowner not acted.

And the bees' honey, had it not been sprayed with chemicals, would have been perfectly safe to eat.

"If he was a skilled beekeeper, there was no reason he couldn't have harvested the honey himself," Dr Cunningham said.

"It's exactly the same honey as you find on the shelf."

The photos are rapidly circulating by email and have been posted on several picture sharing sites.

If anyone else ever has this issue, it is best to call your local pest controller or the department of fisheries. They will be able to contact an experienced bee keeper who will come and remove the bees at no charge. The bees make up an entire hive and are very valuable in honey production and pollination. Please dont kill the bees if you find a swarm in your backyard.
everyone just chill i have grandkids i dont want bees anywhere near them. when i was young i was stung by a bee and another time a wasp
Had an experience where bees made a nice home for themselves inside our balcony. When we did renovations to the balcony, we found lots of honey combs inside spanning about 3-4 meters wide.
people need to wake up, this guy did nothing wrong, he killed some bees who if disturbed when he took the cover of, could have quite easily killed him in a very painful and distressing way. Would you then be singing the bees praises, I do not think so, they could have also quite easily done some terrible and frightening damage to nearby kids. Wake up world and get your priorities right, supermakets are never short of honey.
If all the people who think they know it all and believe they have the right to abuse this bloke actually looked at all the photos and read the captions for each one they would have seen the comment that said "European honeybees have been known to be FATAL to humans" I would have done the same thing.
So what if he could have called a bee keeper to get them removed. There was 1000 bees in his backyard. That is a hazard to anyone who happens to be near that area who is allergic to bees and could be quite painful to anyone who got stung. I don't blame him for exterminating them. Better the bees than one of his family or friends. For those who say the man is an idiot, what would you have done if there was a whole colony of bees taking refuge in your BBQ and there was a chance that for every minute you don't take action, the bees could kill someone. I'd rather be responsible forthe deaths of 1000 bees than for 1 person.
Big Dave - Bar bee que.. simply hilarious.. only post worth reading!
Never mind the bees! How filthy was his barbeque plate? It looks like he hasn't cleaned it for MONTHS! No wonder the bees were able to make such a huge honeycomb. It's a good ad for Mortein! Now all he needs is some Mr Muscle!
I'm not taking any sides here, but its true. Bees are dwindling in number & if you read into it they are a huge part of this world & how we get food.
How funny is this debate? Um, so it's perfectly fine to kill cockroaches, insects etc. In fact the 'weapon of destruction' was a perfectly legal cockroach bomb available in every supermarket in the country. Yet because they're bees, there is an uproar. Sorry but if there's 'buzzing things' in my BBQ I too would fashion a bomb and 'run like the clappers'.
