Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has been secretly cheating on his wife for years in a steamy love affair with a blonde mistress, a British tabloid newspaper has claimed.

The married father-of-four was photographed by the News of the World leaving a London hotel last week after what the newspaper says was a sexual liaison with his lover, Sarah Symonds.

Ramsay, 42, met Symonds, the ex-mistress of bestselling author Jeffrey Archer, back in 2001 and almost immediately began a love affair that has been on and off again since then, the News of the World reports.

But the relationship has heated up in recent times with the pair meeting up for secret trysts at least three times in the past fortnight.

In the latest known meeting, Ramsay and Symonds met at the five-star Marriott Hotel on Thursday.

Symonds checked in to a $925 per night room in the afternoon before travelling to a sex shop in Soho, where she bought bottles of a legal sex drug amyl nitrate, the newspaper said quoting unnamed sources.

Ramsay arrived at the hotel in the evening, spending just over an hour in Symonds room before leaving in a chauffeur-driven car.

The pair were also spotted meeting at a Mayfair apartment twice on November 12 and 13.

Ramsay, who has been married to wife Tana for 12 years, has built up a public image as a devoted family man, often appearing in magazine articles with his family.

In 2006 Ramsay was voted UK's Celebrity father of the Year and in 2007 the Ramsays were voted Celebrity Family of the Year.

Meanwhile, Symonds appears to have built up a reputation as a "professional mistress".

Symonds published a book last year titled: Having an Affair? A Handbook for Other Women.

In the book, Symond tells the story of a friend who had an affair with an unnamed celebrity chef with striking similarities to Ramsay.

“A friend of mine was having an affair with a world-famous TV chef, well-known on both sides of the Atlantic for both his bad language and his good food," she wrote.

Symonds has refused to comment on her alleged affair with Ramsay, telling the News of the World she has "nothing to say on the matter".
