Former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie will spend the next six months at the University of South Carolina lecturing students on politics, tourism, trade and investment.
Mr Beattie will spend the first half of the year as a visiting professor after forming a relationship with the university hierarchy on various trade missions and forming a sister relationship between Queensland and South Carolina.
University of South Carolina President Andrew Sorensen will appoint Mr Beattie on Thursday.
Mr Beattie is expected to take up the appointment at Columbia campus next month, the Australian newspaper reports.
He will be accompanied by his wife, nursing academic Heather Beattie who will also hold lectures.
"No matter what angst exists over the United States presence in Iraq, one thing is clear and that is that the relationship with the US has been longstanding and pivotal to Australia's security," Mr Beattie said.
"We can have our differences with the US on foreign policy, but our relations are nevertheless strong."
