Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks has become the real-life hero for an Australian bride, stopping filming on a $200 million epic to help her get to the church on time.

Hanks gave a helping hand to Natalia Dearnley when her wedding car's path was blocked by the crew filming Angels and Demons in the middle of Rome, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Oscar-winning actor saw the problem and stopped production to help the bride in distress.

"Her limo couldn't deliver her to the door, so I offered my arm so she could get hitched," Hanks was quoted as saying.

The groom Andrew waited patiently inside Rome's centuries-old Pantheon church as Hanks walked Natalia through the set and to the famous building.

"As we were trying to get through Tom came over and asked if he could escort me to my wedding," Ms Dearnley told the Telegraph.

"I couldn't believe it — he stopped filming to help me."

Natalia said Hanks grabbed her veil, threw it over his arm and used his security detail to get through the massive tourist crowd watching the filming.

"It was amazing — dad invited Tom to stay for the wedding but he said he had a movie to make," Ms Dearnley said.

Following the ceremony Hanks and director Ron Howard congratulated the Dearnleys and invited the couple to the movie's world premiere in Rome just weeks ago.

On the red carpet the Dearnleys revealed they were expecting their first child.
