The 2009 ARIA Awards were all about one band, Empire of the Sun.

They impressed on the red carpet and on the stage and triumphed with four awards for album of the year, single of the year, best group and best pop release.

Frontman Luke Steele summed up their night in his unique style.

"In the words of George Harrison: Here comes the sun," he said, accepting the night's top honour for album of the year.

He said after 15 years of making music he was loving the taste of success.

"What a night for Steele," he said.

Former Australian Idol Jessica Mauboy seemed poised for ARIA glory with seven nominations - more than any other artist.

She walked away with just one for highest selling single.

The Darwin singer said she was happy with that.

"I was just really enjoying the whole night," Mauboy said.

TheFIX: Do you know your Aussie music?

Steele was without Empire of the Sun partner in crime Nick Littlemore, who has also been absent from the band's live shows.

He said it was hard at first without Littlemore but dedicated an award to him and the chemistry they have together.

"There wasn't any turmoil between me and Nick," he said.

"There was no animosity, nothing happened.

"He just said he didn't want to tour.

Empire of the Sun picked up a new fan on the night with UK pop star Robbie Williams keen to work with Steele.

Among the night's other big winners were AC/DC who took out best rock album and highest selling album, and Ladyhawke who claimed breakthrough artist, single and album.

Troy Cassar-Daley triumphed in the best country album category, Daniel Merriweather was named best male artist and Sarah Blasko best female artist.

Gyton Grantley and Kate Ritchie hosted the bash at Sydney's Acer Arena though some fans questioned their relevance at a night dedicated to music and voiced their opinions on Twitter.

Robbie Williams and Empire of the Sun were performance highlights, and The Temper Track, Jessica Mauboy, Ladyhawke and Sarah Blasko got the fans cheering.
