Sales of new cars and trucks fell 3.6 per cent in Australia in 2008 but the industry has still posted its second best year on record.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) said on Tuesday 1,012,164 vehicles were sold last year compared to 1,049,982 in 2007.

The industry felt the impact of the global economic downturn towards the end of 2008, with demand slipping 22 per cent in November and 11.3 per cent in December.

Toyota was the top-selling brand last year with 238,983 vehicles, ahead of Holden on 130,338 and Ford on 104,715.

But Holden had the top-selling car, selling 51,093 Commodores compared to 47,901 for the Toyota Corolla.
