Former NSW Liberal leader John Brogden has been appointed as chief executive of the Investment and Financial Services Association.

The representative body for Australia's $1.2 trillion superannuation, funds management and life insurance industry said Mr Brogden would take up the role from August 28 and bring a wealth of experience to the position.

"He joins IFSA at what is an important time for retail funds and superannuation in Australia," Financial Services Minister Chris Bowen said.

"I've enjoyed working with Mr Brogden during his time as chair of ABACUS (the industry body representing credit unions, building societies and friendly societies) and have no doubt that he will represent IFSA with the same passion and commitment."

Mr Brogden was a member of the NSW parliament between 1996 and 2005, and opposition leader between 2002 and 2005.

He was chief executive of health insurer Manchester Unity in 2006 until its merger with HCF in 2008, and chairman of ABACUS from 2006 to 2009.

Announcing the appointment, IFSA chairman David Deverall said his members were working in a challenging environment because of the global financial crisis.

"But it will be the challenge of change which gives this industry the chance to grasp fresh opportunities," he said in a statement.

Mr Brogden said he looked forward to delivering the reforms to be adopted by the association as part of the new superannuation member charter.

He will take over from the retiring Richard Gilbert, who has been the association's chief executive since 2002.

Mr Bowen said: "I would also like to acknowledge the fine work and dedication of Richard Gilbert over a number of years at IFSA and I wish him all the best for a well-deserved retirement."
