US actor Rip Torn, 78, has been charged with breaking into a bank, while drunk, with a loaded gun.

The elderly star, who appeared in Men In Black and Dodgeball, was arrested inside the bank after an alarm was raised.

The police caught him red-handed carrying a revolver.

According to the TMZ entertainment website, police said he was "highly intoxicated" and had gained access by breaking the bank's window.

He was charged with first-degree burglary, carrying a pistol without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated and trespass and is due to appear in court on February 1.

Torn has had previous issues with alcohol with three drink driving arrests.

Last year he attended an alcohol rehabilitation program.
