Beyonce has won six Grammy awards - the most ever collected by a female in one night in the Grammys' 52-year history.
Her wins included song of the year for her anthem Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).
Single Ladies beat out competition from Lady Gaga's Poker Face, Pretty Wings by Maxwell, the Kings of Leon's Use Somebody and Taylor Swift's You Belong With Me.
Beyonce also won Grammys for best R&B female vocal for Single Ladies, the best R&B contemporary album for I Am ... Sasha Fierce and best traditional R&B performance for At Last, from her movie Cadillac Records.
She also won best female Pop vocal performance for Halo.
America's young country music sweetheart Taylor Swift beat Australian Keith Urban to the Grammy for best country album for Fearless.
Fearless also won album of the year, beating Beyonce, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and the Dave Matthews Band.
Her song White Horse gave Swift her first trophy of the night for best female country vocal.
"This is my first Grammy you guys! I mean, this is a Grammy," said an excited Swift as she held her first trophy. She also won best country song for White Horse with songwriter Liz Rose.
In other highlights, Michael Jackson's children Prince and Paris accepted a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys on behalf of their father who died last year.
The show at the Staples Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday included a special 3-D tribute to Jackson featuring a video clip he made of Earth Song as Usher, Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson sang along.
"Through all his songs his message was simple, love. We will continue to spread his message and help the world," Prince (Jackson) said.
In other awards, US band Kings of Leon scored an upset victory by winning the Grammy for Record of the Year for their hit single Use Somebody.
Green Day won the best rock album Grammy for 21st Century breakdown.
Australia's AC/DC won its first Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for War Machine.
The Black Eyed Peas won three awards, including best pop vocal album.
Lady Gaga was among double-winners, along with Jay-Z, Eminem, and Maxwell.
Maxwell, up for six awards, also won his first Grammys - best R&B male vocal for the ballad Pretty Wings and best R&B album for BLACKsummers' night. The album marked the R&B crooner's return after an absence of eight years from the music business.
"I am a little bit choked up right now. This is my first Grammy, and it means a lot to me," Maxwell said.
The best new artist award went to The Zac Brown Band. The country outfit from Atlanta, Georgia beat the Ting Tings, Keri Hilson, MGMT, and the Silversun Pickups.
