Pop sensation Lady Gaga became so addicted to cocaine that she thought it would kill her, according to a new biography.

Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, said her habit got out of hand as she tried to be like her pop idols.

"I thought I was going to die," Gaga says in the book Lady Gaga: Just Dance.

"I wanted to be the artists I loved, like Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol, and I thought the only way to do it was to live the lifestyle."

The multi-Grammy award-winner said she would play songs by The Cure while using cocaine.

"I would like myself in my room and listen to 'Never Enough' on repeat while I did bags and bags of cocaine," Gaga said.

On top of the cocaine use Gaga began to dabble in LSD, leading to erratic behaviour including an impromptu strip on stage in a New York club while she was still widely unknown.

The 23-year-old ended up getting the attention of the audience after stripping down from a skirt and shirt into just her bra, undies, fishnet stockings and white shoes — a look that set the tone for her future performances.

In the book Gaga also discusses her lovelife, including a relationship with Luc Carl which ended due to her drug consumption.

Lady Gaga: Just Dance by Helia Phoenix is due to go on sale later this month.
