Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are suing the British tabloid that published a story alleging they were preparing to split.

The story, published on 24 January, said the couple had signed an agreement to separate, split assets and custody of their children.

The couple released a statement through their lawyers as they made a rare public appearance at yesterday's Super Bowl with their eldest son Maddox.

Lawyer Keith Schlling said the accusations that were "widely republished" were "false and intrusive", BBC News reports.

Mr Schilling said the newspaper had failed to properly apologise after the couple asked for a retraction of the story.

The newspaper reported that the Hollywood power couple had visited a divorce lawyer in December and had plans drawn up to split custody of their children and their joint assets estimated to be worth $366 million.

Sorrel Trope, named in the media as the divorce lawyer for the couple, denied having ever met them.

"I have had no contact from… Angelina Jolie and/or Brad Pitt," Mr Sorrell was quoted as saying in a statement from Schillings Lawyers.

Pitt and Jolie, who are not married, have six children under the age of 10.
