Take That singer Mark Owen has apologised to his wife after admitting to a string of affairs.

The pop idol, who decided to come clean in an effort to start afresh with his wife Emma, has blamed a battle with alcohol for his womanising ways, The Sun newspaper reports.

The 38-year-old, who won Celebrity Big Brother in 2002, said he acknowledged the "pain" he had caused his friends and family after admitting to affairs with up to 10 women.

"I'm deeply sorry for the pain my actions have caused my family and friends," Owen said in a statement.

"I have been an idiot ... it's about me, my mistakes.

"Nobody else is to blame."

Owen, who is known in the UK press for his "squeaky-clean" image, married Emma in October last year but had been in a relationship with her for five years.

The couple have two children together.

Owen told The Sun most of flings had been one-night stands, but he had an ongoing four-year relationship with accounts manager Neva Hanley that ended just a month before his wedding.

Despite his dalliances, Owen said he had been faithful to his wife since his marriage.

"On many levels it was a fresh start and that was how I was looking at it," Owen told The Sun.

Owen is an original member of UK pop act Take That, which rose to prominence in the 1990s with a string of hits in the UK and around the world.

The band has reformed in 2005 without founding member Robbie Williams, who has forged a successful solo career.
