Miley Cyrus has shocked the star-studded crowd at the MTV Video Music Awards with a raunchy performance that included simulated sex acts.
The pop singer sang her controversial hit track 'We Can't Stop', which features lyrics that references party drug MDMA, before gyrating provocatively on stage with singer Robin Thicke for his track 'Blurred Lines'.
Cyrus wore a leotard featuring a teddy bear with its tongue stuck out before stripping down to flesh-coloured underwear for the duet with Thicke at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Fellow music stars in the crowd watched in shock as Cyrus paraded around the stage and used a foam hand to simulate sexual acts on herself and Thicke, before bending down in front of the male singer "twerking" into his crotch.
Movie star Will Smith and his family were caught on camera with mouths agape during Cyrus's performance, while Canadian R&B singer Drake was seen looking down at the ground.
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton started off his summary of the routine with "Wha-wha-what???".
Others took to Twitter to ridicule her performance.
"Miley killed chuck e cheese and used his pelt as her outfit," tweeted rapper Xzibit, while actress Minnie Driver said Cyrus "needs an early night".
Cyrus is up for three awards at the event, but has already lost out to songstress Taylor Swift, who took out Best Female Video.
