An iconic painting by the late artist Arthur Boyd has fetched an impressive $660,000 at auction in Sydney.

The 1958 painting, Death of a Husband, was sold to an investor at the Lawson-Menzies Sydney art auction on Tuesday night.

The work comes from Boyd's Bride Paintings collection, which is regarded among the most significant historical series of 20th Century Australian art.

The work reflects on Boyd's angst-ridden relationship with a black trouper who Boyd encountered during a trip to Alice Springs in 1951.

Lawson-Menzies chief executive Martin Farrah was excited by the auction result.

"There was significant investor interest in the Arthur Boyd and its sale at $660,000 indicates a very buoyant market for art investment," he said.

Other items to go under the hammer included the 1967 Adagio by John Brack which sold for $372,000, and Howard Arkley's Own Your Own Flats from 1987, which sold for $192,000.

More than $2.1 million was taken for paintings at the auction.
