Denmark's Queen Margrethe has created the costumes and sets for a film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 1838 fairytale The Wild Swans, she told reporters on Friday.
The 68-year-old monarch has in recent years designed costumes and decor for several ballets inspired by the famed Danish author, and has since the 1980s delved into painting, drawing and book illustrations, as well as scenography for theatre and television production.
This is the first time she has worked on a film.
She said it was her "fascination with Andersen" that got her involved in the project.
His writing is "so rich, when I was reading it his expressions immediately filled my head with images," she said.
Working with a film crew for the first time, she initially felt "like a big amateur" but "within a few minutes was very at ease working with professionals."
The fairytale tells the story of a young princess, Eliza, and her 11 brothers. Their father, the king, has remarried a jealous woman who transforms the princes into wild swans.
Directed by Danish stars Ghita Noerby and Peter Flinth, the film is due out in cinemas across Denmark in the autumn.
