A movie studio famous for its "mockbuster" B-grade knock-offs of Hollywood blockbusters has set its sights on James Cameron's epic love story Titanic.

The Asylum studio has just released the trailer for Titanic II, set 100 years after the ill-fated maiden voyage of the world's most famous cruise-liner.

The straight-to-DVD film — which uses the tagline "Looks like history is repeating itself!" — follows the Titanic II as it travels along the same route as its doomed namesake.

When a tsunami hurls an iceberg into the ship's path the passengers and crew fight to keep the ship afloat which, judging by the end of the film's trailer, proves futile.

Dick van Dyke's grandson Shane directs and stars in the film alongside Melrose Place beauty Brooke Burns and X-Men star Bruce Davison.

Critics have already lampooned the film, with Entertainment Weekly questioning whether it should have been called "Aquatic Boogaloo".

"I'm guessing the budget for Titanic II would barely have covered the amount [James] Cameron spent on authentic-looking ship's barf bags," the site said.

The Examiner website said the trailer arrived "in a spectacular, jaw-dropping display of fail".

Asylum is responsible for a slew of other outlandish titles like Paranormal Entity, Snakes on a Train, Terminators, Pirates of Treasure Island and Da Vinci Treasure.
