Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly pulled out of Mel Gibson's latest movie project in a bid to distance himself from the scandal-prone actor.

According to entertainment website RadarOnline.com, DiCaprio told sources there was "not a chance" that he would still take part in Gibson's upcoming film, believed to be about the Vikings.

While DiCaprio is riding the wave of recent successes, including his box office smash hits Inception and Shutter Island, Gibson has been embroiled in a bitter custody battle with the mother of his child and ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

Several damaging audio recordings of Gibson's racist and violent rants at Grigorieva have been leaked to the media in recent weeks.

DiCaprio decided to quit the project because he could not risk damaging his reputation, Radar reported.

The as-yet-untitled film was due to begin filming later this year and was to be jointly produced by Graham King and Gibson's Icon Productions.

The film was planned to be a period piece on the ancient Viking warriors, similar in scope to Gibson's previous movies Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ.
