Year 12 students at Melbourne High School got more than they bargained for when pop star Katy Perry gatecrashed their formal on Friday night.

Most of the students didn't realise that they had a celebrity in their midst until Perry grabbed a microphone and walked into the centre of the dance floor at about 11pm.

She joined male students, who were in the middle of a group dance routine to Beyonce's All The Single Ladies, before the DJ switched to Perry's song California Gurls.

"I saw everyone rush the dance floor," year 12 student Stefan Uzelac told The Age.

"I thought maybe it was just a good song, but then everyone started screaming her name so I ran down.

"Everyone was engulfing her, taking photos, screaming."

Perry's entourage had cleared the stunt with student council president Anthony Lay shortly before she entered the party, held at the Melbourne Grand Hyatt, through a back door.

MTV presenter Ruby Rose joined Perry at the formal and posted photos of the stunt online yesterday, tweeting "I don't know who's [sic] year 12 formal it was but nothing was going to stop @katyperry..."

It didn't take long for Perry to tell her fans of her exploits, tweeting "I totes just crashed a prom!" at 11.45pm.

Perry did not linger after her song was finished, but posed for photos before continuing her night on the town with Rose.

Perry left Melbourne yesterday and is now in Tokyo.

Melbourne High School is an all-male school located in the City of Stonnington.
