A Playboy model was arrested after she suffered an anxiety attack on a plane and attempted to open a door mid-flight.

Tiffany Livingston, 21, was 3000m in the air on JetBlue Flight 522 from Orlando to Newark when she reportedly tried to open the plane door.

Livingston was detained when the plane landed but was released hours later, CBS News reports.

Despite passengers' claims she had attempted to open the door, police concluded that she was instead attempting to use the door's handle to stabilise herself.

A spokeswoman for Livingston's former modelling agency said she had dealt with minor anxiety issues in the past.

"However [she] has always maintained a high level of professionalism in the modelling business," the spokeswoman said.

The incident comes just weeks after JetBlue air steward Steven Slater opened the emergency chute of a plane after quitting his job.

A spokesman for the airline company said they would "co-operate fully with local authorities" regarding the latest incident.

Livingston, from the US state Rhode Island, was featured as a centrefold in the Singapore version of Playboy in 2009.
