Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon has announced her engagement to her long-time lesbian lover at a gay rally in New York.
The 43-year-old actress, who played Miranda in the popular US television series, showed off a diamond ring as she defended same sex marriage at the 'Action=Marriage Equality' rally in Manhattan on Sunday.
"Does me and my girlfriend getting married have any effect on you and your wife, or you and your husband sitting at home?" she told the crowd.
"I often hear the campaign to legalise same-sex marriage is an attack on traditional marriage and I want to say you are not the ones being attacked, we are."
Nixon has been dating education activist Christine Mariononi for six years.
Mariononi, 42, proposed to Nixon last month but the date of the wedding has not been set.
"I don't really want to get married to get married 'pretend' … we'd like to do it in a real, actual, legal way that the state would recognise", Nixon was quoted as saying in People magazine.
Nixon has two children, aged 14 and six, to former long-term boyfriend Danny Mozes, with whom she spilt in 2002.
