Actor Matthew Newton has been arrested for breaching an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) taken out by his ex-girlfriend Rachael Taylor.

Newton was arrested in Kings Cross on Tuesday afternoon for breaching the order.

The 34-year-old is alleged to have contacted Ms Taylor by phone over the weekend, which would breach a court order stipulating he must have no contact with her.

While not confirming Newton's identity, police said a 34-year-old man was charged with breaching about 5pm (AEDT) on Tuesday an AVO and using a carriage service to menace or harass.

He was granted bail and is due to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on March 2.
