MasterChef judge Matt Moran has admitted video of him going into a rage on the set of a cooking show was a publicity stunt.

The celebrity chef, who owns acclaimed Sydney restaurant ARIA, launched an expletive-laden tirade at a food stylist in a clip uploaded to YouTube yesterday.

The video was released by charity group OzHarvest to bring attention to the issue of food wastage in Australia.

In the clip, Moran smiles as he is filmed performing a cooking segment on a kitchen set, but his mood changes suddenly when the crew member tosses a plate of chicken into the bin.

"Mate what are you doing? Why throw that away for?" he said.

"I just spent half an hour putting that perfectly on a plate and you come along and throw it in the f---ing bin."

The food stylist tells Moran he was resetting, preparing the set for another take.

"I don't care if you're f---ing resetting — there's nothing wrong with that food," Moran replies.

"It could have fed one of these guys, it could have fed me. Get it out of the bin and put it and back on the f---ing plate.

Another member of the crew seemingly steps in to try and calm Moran, telling him that it is "just the way we do it".

"If you waste food like that, I don't want f---ing anything to do with it," Moran says.

"Get yourself another chef, now p--- off."

Moran then appears to storm off the set, leaving a stony-faced crew wondering what to do.

"I was more than happy to be involved in something so controversial if it meant that the message of food waste would be brought to the top of Australians' minds," Moran said when admitting the hoax.

"It’s a f---ing great cause."

The celebrity chef has also appeared on Channel Nine's The Chopping Block and Channel Seven's My Kitchen Rules.
