Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno is "outrageous", "utterly brilliant" and contains "one of the most horrific incidents ever committed to celluloid", according to the first review of the film.

Bruno, which premiered in Paris last night, will come to be known for an eye-popping pygmy sex scene involving fire extinguishers, champagne bottles and fitness equipment, British tabloid The Sun reports.

Cohen's highly camp Austrian fashion journalist is set to confront cinemagoers in a similar vein to his last infamous creation, Borat.

"To say Bruno makes uncomfortable viewing is an understatement of Battle of Britain proportions," writes reviewer Gordon Smart.

"When I wasn't giggling like a 14-year-old, I was cowering behind my hands.

"And I wasn’t just hiding from the acres of kugelsack, Bruno’s word for the lunchbox, shown during the 90 minutes."

Smart also said the "arsenhaller" bleaching scene was "enough … to last a lifetime".

Austria's "last famous export", Adolf Hitler, also gets regular mentions throughout the film, he said.

The film sees fashion presenter Bruno fired from his job on Austrian television after crashing a Milan fashion show, shocking many prominent personalities in the fashion world with a provocative all-in-one outfit.

Bruno then moves to Los Angeles, where he manages to dupe famous names including Paula Abdul and Latoya Jackson into being part of his ridiculous stunts.

Smart said the film was brilliant in places but lost momentum towards the end, perhaps falling short of the "pure belly-laugh moments" of Borat.

Cohen will be in Sydney for the June 29 Australian premiere of Bruno, with the film opening in cinemas across the country on July 8.
