Australian screen icon Bert Newton is ill with pneumonia and is being treated in a Melbourne hospital.

The 72-year-old will be treated for at least a week after being admitted to Melbourne's private Epworth hospital.

The former Good Morning Australia host is thought to have caught the disease from his two-year-old granddaughter Eva after spending time her in Melbourne.

"[Eva] had it when she was first born. She was very ill and she has recently had another touch of it," Entertainment reporter Peter Ford told 3AW radio.

"Bert, who has been away performing in Wicked in Adelaide, was back in Melbourne and spending lots of time with his little granddaughter because he hadn't seen her in so long."

Eva is the daughter of Lauren Newton and her partner, former Olympic swimmer Matt Welsh.

Newton rose to fame alongside fellow television stars Graham Kennedy and Don Lane. He has won four Logies awards.
