ABC criticised for Gillard flag sex scene

The ABC has defended a scene in its new comedy At Home With Julia in which the actors playing Julia Gillard and first bloke Tim Mathieson lying naked under an Australian flag after having sex.

In the scene, Gillard and Mathieson use the flag as a sheet as they lie on the floor of her office. The episode is due to air tomorrow night.

A spokesman for the ABC said he could not see why the flag could not be used as an impromptu bed sheet, the Daily Telegraph reports.

"If it's ok for others to drape themselves in our flag for all manner of occasions, I really don't see why it can't be draped over our prime minister as a symbol of love," he told the newspaper.

But monarchist David Flint said the scene was disrespectful.

"This is probably going a bit far," he said.
