Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes made a surprise appearance at the MCG last night to watch a blockbuster AFL clash alongside good friend James Packer.

The Hollywood pair celebrated Cruise's 47th birthday — minus daughter Suri — from the comfort of the Crown Casino box as Collingwood beat Essendon in front a 70,000-strong crowd.

The pair met up and chatted with Holmes' Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark co-star Guy Pearce inside the box.

Television cameras caught Cruise nodding his head vigorously when young Essendon star Alwyn Davey snapped an impressive goal from the forward pocket.

The A-lister nodded and waved a number of times to fans who spotted him from the crowd.
