Singing sensation Jessica Mauboy has added another Deadly gong to her collection after she was named female artist of the year at the Sydney indigenous awards ceremony.

The former Australian Idol contestant took out the award at the annual Deadly Awards, held in Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night.

The awards, now in their 17th year, celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander achievements in entertainment, music, sport and the community.

Mauboy, who won best artist in 2007 and three Deadly awards in 2009, has seen her second album, Get `em Girls, race through the charts.

The sold-out ceremony was hosted by City Homicide's Aaron Pederson, who took home a best actor award, and female artist nominee Casey Donovan.

Fellow singer Gurrumul Yunupingu was a double winner - taking both male artist of the year and album of the year for `Rrakala at the ceremony.

Actor Deborah Mailman retained the title of best female actor for her role in Offspring, following up on her win last year for Bran Nue Dae.

Film of the year went to Mad Bastards, a movie set against the wild lands of northern Aboriginal Australia.

Northern Territory band Iwantja were named most promising new talent in music and, in a good year for indigenous hip-hop, The Last Kinection won band of the year and single release of the year.

Across other arts, Wiradjuri author Anita Heiss took out the outstanding achievement in literature award for her novel Paris Dreaming.

SBS's indigenous current affairs program, Living Black, won television show of the year.

In sports, Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston, who led his team to their first rugby league finals series in four years, took out outstanding achievement in NRL.

Young Carlton midfielder Andrew Walker, dubbed "the match winner" by fans, won the outstanding achievement in AFL award and Melbourne Tigers basketballer Patrick Mills was named sportsman of the year.

Women's National Basketball League player Rohanee Cox won sportswoman of the year, beating Junior Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty.

This year's ceremony saw performances from Shellie Morris and the Yanyuwa Singers and the Gondwana National Indigenous Children's Choir.

The Deadlys' executive producer Gavin Jones described this year's awards ceremony as the best yet.

"The Deadlys go from strength to strength each year," Mr Jones said.

"We have strong finalists and winners to showcase, some of indigenous Australia's best talent to grace the Opera House state and the overwhelming support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the wider Australian public as ingredients that produce a very successful national awards night."

* The Deadly Awards will be broadcast on SBS One on Sunday, October 2 at 9.30pm and repeated on SBS Two on Saturday, October 8 at 7.30pm.
