Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher's marriage failed because the couple had an open relationship, US comedian Chelsea Handler has told CNN.

Moore yesterday announced she had filed divorce following claims Kutcher cheated on her, including on the night of his sixth wedding anniversary in September.

Handler made the claims to Piers Morgan on his CNN show on Thursday night telling the host: "I think they probably had a lot of good times with some other women."

"Clearly they had a lot of threesomes, that led to twosomes without Demi and that leads to a divorce," Handler said.

The comedian added that she felt for Demi, who has been dealing with the fallout of rumours of Kutcher's extra-marital affairs for months.

Moore said in a statement yesterday: "It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton."

"As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."

Kutcher responded on his chime.in page, posting: "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi."

"Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and light, AK," Kutcher wrote.

The claims the couple had an open relationship were backed up by Brittney Jones, who reportedly hooked up with Kutcher in 2010.

"Ashton told me that both he and Demi had an 'open relationship' and that he was not in fact cheating," Jones told TMZ on Friday, adding that even though divorce is a "bummer", she felt somewhat vindicated.
