Never-before-seen footage has emerged of the moment Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire as he filmed a Pepsi television commercial.

The King of Pop's hair went up in flames during the sixth take of the ad, which was filmed at Los Angeles's famous Shrine Auditorium in 1984.

The clip, published by Us Weekly magazine, shows a pyrotechnics display go off around Jackson as planned, but some of the sparks catch his hair.

The singer continues to dance and descend some stairs unaware he is on fire.

The incident is said to have set off Jackson's addiction to prescription drugs, an affliction that plagued him until his death last month, the magazine reports.

The second- and third-degree burns, and subsequent surgeries on the pop icon's scalp required several painkilling medications, the report said.

The release of the video comes as more shocking evidence of Jackson's addictions to medication was made public for the time.

Photos from seven years ago show a gruesome black blotch on the singer's leg surrounded by needle marks.

"On the photographs of Michael Jackson, it looks like there was necrosis on his lower leg where there might have been fluid that went into his lower leg," dermatologist Debra Jaliman told US network ABC.

"It looks like there are multiple puncture points from IV placement."

Dr Jaliman said it was very unusual for an intravenous drip to be placed in a person's legs.

The only reason for doing so would be if Jackson no longer had visible veins in his hands or arms, she said.
