Alvin and the Chipmunks star David Cross has told cinemagoers not to see the latest instalment of the popular film franchise.

In an interview on late night chat show Conan, the comedian tore into the film and the process of making it.

Cross told Conan he was forced "at legal gunpoint" to spend a week on a cruise ship wearing a pelican mascot costume entirely covering his face, instead of allowing a stand-in to do it.

"In all honesty it was the most miserable experience I've ever had in my professional life," he said.

"It was a big commercial for Carnival Cruise Lines."

Cross has played the Chipmunks' manager Ian in all three of the Chipmunks movies.

While speaking well of the director and the other actors, Cross had unkind words for one of the film's producers.

"There was this one producer. She is the personification of what people think about when they think negatively about Jews."

Cross, who was raised Jewish, found fame in cult comedy series Arrested Development as a closeted gay therapist trying to make it as a Hollywood actor.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was widely panned by critics but has proven a commercial hit, grossing more than $200 million worldwide in less than a month.
