It isn't the Super Bowl unless a performer stirs up controversy.

This year is no different with British singer MIA sticking her middle finger up at the camera while performing with Madonna and Nicki Minaj during the halftime show.

The rap singer was making a guest appearance on stage for a rendition of Madonna's latest single 'Give Me All Your Luvin'.

When the song came to a swear word, MIA stopped herself from saying it.

Instead, she replaced the word with a cheeky middle finger directed at the camera, a gesture that was screened to the millions of people watching the gridiron match at home.

The image on the screen then scrambled, suggesting that NBC television -- the official broadcaster of this year's Super Bowl -- was caught off-guard.

Super Bowl scandals are not uncommon — last year, Christina Aguilera skipped two lines of the national anthem during the opening performance.

In 2007, pop singer Prince was silhouetted in an unusual pose with his guitar and in 2004, Janet Jackson was the victim of the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" when her tassel-adorned breast was exposed by Justin Timberlake during their performance.

The New York Giants won today's Super Bowl XLVI game against the New England Patriots.
