Former Backstreet Boy Nick Carter has admitted he skipped his sister's funeral to perform at a concert at the weekend.

The 32-year-old singer performed in Philadelphia and hosted a party at an Atlantic City resort on Saturday night, while others attended the funeral of his younger sister Leslie.

Leslie, 25, died suddenly on February 1 from a reported drug overdose of pills prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

"I wanted to be at my sister's funeral but my family has always had a complicated dynamic," Carter told The Insider in a statement.

"I love my family… There are so many emotions for me surrounding the loss of my sister. I am trying to stay healthy, positive and focused."

Entertainment website TMZ reported the former Backstreet Boy wanted to go to the New York service but was never told the details of when and where it would be.

His pop singer brother Aaron, 24, attended the funeral.

Nick Carter posted a message on his website last week reassuring fans his upcoming US tour would go ahead, despite his sister’s death.

“Performing is cathartic to me and I am dedicating the rest of my tour to my sister since she loved to watch me perform,” he said.
