Channel Nine's long-running variety show Hey Hey It's Saturday will return to Australian television screens later this year.

The network today announced the show would return for two live specials reuniting original cast members.

Channel Nine program director Michael Healy said he was delighted to have the popular variety show back on the air.

"Audiences are craving family viewing, and Hey Hey appealed to all age groups," he said.

“It’s a show the whole family can watch together and enjoy.” Each show will run for two hours and feature original cast members and characters including Daryl Somers, "Dickie" Knee and Plucka Duck.

"All the gang are really enthusiastic and can't wait to recreate the fun we had over the 28 years of the show," Somers said.

"There is enormous groundswell of public support for this, so it’s the right time to do this… while we are all still here!"

Channel Nine said it would announce the show's on air dates in the coming months.
